How do I know if I qualify?
You must have graduated from an accredited high school or vocational school or equivalent. Candidates must be within the age range of 21 years through 31 years, no felony convictions, not currently on probation or parole. Candidates must meet and maintain medical and physical standards, including but not limited to hearing and vision standards, as prescribed by the Civil Service Commission and/or the Department of Public Safety, Division of Police.

What if I have points on my driver’s license?
You must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license, free of revocation or suspension. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration. Time of appointment is the first day of paid employment. An applicant having a valid driver’s license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio driver’s license must be obtained prior to hiring.

What happens after I apply?
You will be notified by mail of your date to take the civil service examination. This examination is open to all who meet the minimum qualifications and requirements listed. The examination will consist of written tests, physical ability test, physical fitness test, comprehensive medical and psychological tests and a thorough background investigation including a polygraph. Candidates who successfully complete the written examination are eligible for the following bonus credits. However, bonus credit cannot exceed a total of 25% of the candidate’s passing written examination grade.

Do I have to live in the City of Akron in order to take the test?
A person appointed to this position shall become a resident citizen of the City of Akron within twelve (12) months of the appointment date and will remain a resident citizen of the City of Akron during the term of employment. Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron continuously for at least one year immediately prior to the examination, and who remain resident citizens of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process, will have a 15% bonus added to their passing grades.

What bonus points can I get?
Besides the 15% residency bonus, a candidate who has successfully completed accredited college course work will be awarded additional education credit not to exceed 10% of his/her passing written examination grade. Candidates must submit proof of college course work in the form of degrees or official college transcripts with their completed applications or at the written examination.

How long is the training for a police officer?
The Akron Police Department provides a 24 week long training academy at no cost to the recruit. This academy prepares the candidate for the Ohio Peace Officers certification test. All law enforcement officers must be certified by the State of Ohio.

Do I get paid while I’m in the Academy?
Yes. Recruits are paid the minimum salary for police officers from the very first day of the academy. After 90 days, the City of Akron also provides, to the recruits and eligible dependents, hospitalization, surgical, outpatient services, prescription, dental and vision care insurance protection. Employees are also provided life insurance.

When is the examination?
The written examination will be administered the week of September 15, 2008. You will be notified by mail approximately one week ahead as to your scheduled session.

How can the City of Akron require a maximum age of 31?
Current law permits police departments to set the maximum hiring age of new recruits. An ordinance was adopted by Akron City Council January 1998, establishing the maximum age of 31.

*Must be 21 years old by September 20, 2008.
*No person shall be permitted into the police academy if they are 32 years old or older.
